What is a good brand of trumpet to buy my son who is just starting out in beginner band?
I would prefer not to expensive but not bottom of the line either. Something decent.
I'd purchase a used trumpet. Look at ads in Craig's List, newspapers, and look in Pawn Shops. Since it's such a personal preference, an item your son does not yet have, it's hard for you to tell.
You might try just renting one until his opinion means something.
That said, for used trumpets the best horns generally are Bach, Yamaha, Schilke, Besson (not Bessons-an imitation of the French Besson, Selmer Paris. Other brands made before 1970 that are good used trumpets are: Olds, Conn, King, Reynolds.
If you can stay away from the ones made in India, China, Eastern Europe as they are generally of lesser quality.
