Bug collectors: What to do to prevent odor / stink?
My daughter loves collecting bugs but when we open the jars they stink! Any way to prevent this? If she starts a collection should we be doing something to preserve this? I dont seem to find any beginner kits online for collecting bugs (well aside from living bugs). Any help would be great thanks!
The insects smell bad because they are wet and are being decomposed. Insects are very easy to keep in collections. Put the bugs in a jar and stick it in the freezer. Wait at least 8-12 hours to make sure that they are dead, then just stick pins in them and let them air dry. After about a week they are dry enough that all that is left is really their outside shell and they shouldn't smell bad. There are lots of good websites online that show you how and where to pin an insect. There are kits available online with special insect pins that won't rust, but regular sewing pins are better than nothing.
If you are looking to spend a little more money, www.wardsci.com sells professional level entomology supplies. Here is a decent starter kit http://wardsci.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_IG0011745_A_name_E_Insect+Collecting+Kit
