How to test hair for lead exposure (without buying a kit)?
For a science fair project, I would like to test people's hair for lead (with different occupations, etc.) without buying a kit. I know that this possible, because I have seen it done before. What chemicals are needed?
What are the testing procedures?
I can find/buy the chemicals if I know what they are.
Any help is greatly appreciated in advance.
Thanks,
J
Methods to detect lead in living organisms are not purely chemical but use spectroscopy (optical or x-ray) or electrochemistry.

Unless you have very expensive equipment, you can't use atomic spectroscopy to detect the tiny concentrations that lead to lead poisoning.
The chemical test kits detect the metal in high concentrations in paints etc. only. They are not nearly sensitive enough to detect lead levels in humans that would lead to disease.
So that might leave the stripping voltametry:

If you are really good at chemistry, you might be able to pull that off. Personally, I would doubt it. But then... I am a physicist who sucks at chemistry.
Good luck!
