Entertain Children and Christmas Guests by Making Unique Ornaments

When your children start getting antsy waiting for Christmas to finally come you can try to direct some of that energy into creating unique ornaments for them to hang on the Christmas tree. It will keep them occupied and give you treasures to pack away for years to come.

And it's not just children that ornament making can entertain. If you are going to have a house full of guests then you can use ornament making as a replacement for a gift exchange. The people who want to talk can talk and those who want something else to concentrate on will have an excuse to avoid making conversation. You can even pull names and have each person make an ornament for someone else.

There are many different easy ways to make handmade Christmas ornaments. Here a few to try.

Flat Ornaments

Buy some thick cardstock in bright colors and cut it into ornaments shapes like circles, stars, and trees. Bring in a variety of crayons and markers to use in creating designs and let everyone color away. You might gather some magazines up ahead of time to give the decorators ideas.

Depending on how much mess you're willing to clean up you can add paints, glue, scraps of paper, and glitter. If you decide to allow glitter you might want to put a plastic tarp underneath the table so your floor doesn't still shine come June.

Don't forget the hole punch so you can make neat holes to thread ribbons through and hang the ornaments up. You might also be able to find thin wooden shapes if paper ones don't appeal to you.

Shaped Ornaments

Buy handfuls of pipe cleaners and beads for this one. Make sure you select beads with large enough holes for the pipe cleaners to fit through them and that you have wire cutters or very strong scissors available to make shorter lengths.

The pipe cleaners can be bent and twisted into shapes such as human figures , reindeer, or stars. The beads will add bulk, different colors, and a bit of shine to the ornaments. Safety pins with beads on them can be joined together for details such as Santa's beard or an angel's wings.

Globe Ornaments

Buy the hollow blank glass ornament balls from the craft store. Add in some paint specifically for glass and a finishing spray to protect the decoration. You might also want to purchase tinsel and other interesting things to put inside of the glass balls

This option is best if you are working only with adults and older children since glass is breakable. The benefit is that the end result is more likely to look elegant and be considered worth keeping than the previous two methods.

Other Types of Ornaments to Make

These are only three suggestions for making ornaments in groups. If you have more time or more skilled children, then there is a wide range of craft methods open to you from sculpting with polymer clay to embroidering fabric.

If you don't think that you can get your family to gather together for an ornament creation evening, but like the idea of having unique Christmas ornaments on the tree then you can seek out ones that have other people have made. They won't have your child's touch but are often more durable and come in a great variety of styles of designs.
