Why using action figures, such as those from Schleich, are good for Children's Behaviour
What is acceptable or normal behaviour for a child depends on a number of factors, the most important being the age of the child. As a child's development progresses, he or she is more and more able to determine what is expected in terms of behaviour and what he or she can get away with.
It is generally agreed that children tend to continue a behaviour when it is rewarded (the reward can be something tangible or just praise, and cease a behaviour when it is ignored. Consistency of response by the parent to the child's behaviour is important, otherwise confusion and behavioural difficulties may set in. It follows that in young children unwanted or "bad" behaviour should probably be ignored. Actual castigation might be necessary in some circumstances when a particular type of behaviour is completely unacceptable or dangerous to a child, but, unfortunately it is sometimes counter-productive as it draws attention to, and may even encourage that behaviour. Sure, parenting is not easy!
It is also argued that these days that physical punishment should be avoided at all costs. It only leads to aggression in a child or other psychological problems. The alternative way to encourage good behaviour is with a reward system. This probably only works with a child over two years of age, and works better the older and more able to reason, the child is.
The method is to explain the desired behaviour and the reward. It is often necessary to put a time limit on the situation. For example, you might say to your child "if you get into your pyjamas and brush your teeth before this TV show is over you can stay up another half hour", or "you will get a reward tomorrow". The reward is either a privilege or a tangible thing like a small toy.
If using toys in your reward system you obviously cannot afford a large number of expensive toys so it is important to choose something small and inexpensive that has inherent value for the child, and ideally becomes more valuable when added to others. Thus the best kind of toys can be small models or collectables of some kind that the child has an interest in and can appreciate the growing collection. Lots of children like to collect things, whether it is marbles, pictures, small dolls, models of animals, or action figures.
