Do I trust my test strips or do I trust my liquid drop test?
My husband and I have a tank cycling at the moment. For fun we decided that we would test the water with the cheaper 5-in-1 test strip and the more expensive liquid drop test kit for comparison reasons.
The test strip showed the Nitrites at 0.
The liquid drop test showed the Nitrites at 0.4.
These two readings are obviously very different from each other which disappoints me. You could potentially kill fish if you added them in and you wouldn't even know it by the test strip.
I've read that the test strips are notoriously inaccurate while the liquid drop test is more reliable. Is this true? Should I continue to test with both methods or just throw away the test strips?
Just to mention, both the strips and the liquid drop test are brand new.
As you've heard, test strips are indeed notoriously inaccurate. Trust the liquid test instead, and don't bother with the strips any longer.
The test strips also aren't cheaper, at least in the long run. While they cost more overall, most liquid test kits can be used hundreds of times (depending on the specific test), which results in a lower cost per test.
