What is the best kind of motor to use for a homemade RC car?
For this year's science fair my son wants to design and build a solar powered remote control car. What is the best kind of motor to use for this project?
We tried to build the first prototype using the small hobby motor in his snap circuitry kit (SC-100) but it didn't have enough power - the wheel ground to a stop as soon as it touched the ground. :p
Thanks in advance =^_^=
The simplest and most efficient type would be a permanent-magnet DC motor. Unless he is planning to build his own, they can be found through many industrial surplus sites such as All Electronics Corp, http://www.allelectronics.com/ B.G. Micro, Electronics, http://www.bgmicro.com/ Herbach & Rademan http://www.herbach.com/ MPJA http://www.mpja.com/index.htm and many others.
Before ordering, though, he will need to learn some basic physics in order to determine how much torque he will need from the motor, how its weight will affect the performance of the car, how much energy is wasted in the motor, etc. Otherwise you will be spending lots of money for lots of motors!
