Bilingual parents: How did you comunicate with your baby at home?!?
I speak Portugueses and English (I'm from Brazil)... and my husband speaks only English (but he's trying to learn portuguese too). I'm almost 28 weeks pregnant with 1st baby (it's a girl!!!). I really want my daughter to speak both languages.
I'm reading books and articles about this subject to get more information... but It would be nice to know what other people did and what they recommend.
Thank you so much!
My mothers parents only spoke Polish when they first came to the USA. They would naturally have to speak that at home and their kids learned that as their first language. When they went to school , the kids learned english. My grandparents felt when you are in America you should speak english. SO my mother told me that she had to teach them english by not speaking polish in the home and they had already taught her their native language when she learned to first talk.
I feel you could speak in Portugese and your hubby should speak in English to the baby and this way the child will learn both. My mother lived in the bilingual atmosphere while her parents were learning to speak english as well. It can happen.
You'd be surprised how fast toddlers learn language. They say that it is now common to use sign language with babies before they learn to speak as a way to communicate first.
