Small black insects in my corn snakes vivarium. What should I do?
I was spot checking my corn snakes vivarium today and discovered a lot of small black insects running about under the substrate. I'm assuming these are mites. What is the best way to deal with them and is there a chance they could escape from the air vents and breed outside of the enclosure i.e. throughout the house?
We had mites and called our local snake specialist shop and got some advice, he told us that because mites live under the scales of snakes they get a small air pocket around them when the snake goes under water, they can breathe for hours with this so if you are going to soak your snake to get rid of the mites you will have to put it into water it cannot get out of for best part of a day to be sure, this may be stressful for your snake if it is not used to soaking for this length of time and even if it does soak regularly it may not appreciate this enforced bathing, it is a possibility and short term solution for making the snake more comfortable but not recommended as a way to eliminate mites and will probably upset your pet. We used a spray in the viv, this is a really easy way to get rid or these troublesome pests, we were using loose substrate at the time and have since switched to newspaper with a view to getting all ours on astroturf, paper and turf don't allow the mites to hide or live so well so seems to be a much better alternative and they are also cheaper and easier to clean than wood chips etc. Mites can and will get out of the air vents or any other gap but will not breed outside of the viv, they can go arond six feet from the viv before needing to return and feed and will infest any other vivs you happen to have nearby although they do not spread from species to species, i.e. snake mites will not live on lizards etc, if you have any other snakes in the same room i would recommend treating their vivs for mites too as a precaution, you don't want to get rid of them in one then find out another viv had them and has re-infested them all again. Good luck, mites are notoriously hard to be rid of, this is why i recommend no messing about with soaking etc, just treat with the spray straight away and save yourself ( and your snake ) any hassle
