Cultural Ambassador Diandian Wu's Musical Journey

Intrigued by the sound of the piano and its elegant physical structure, Diandian Wu enthusiastically learned to play the universally known instrument at 6 years old. Wu started his musical journey early in life and was surrounded by artistic talent growing up in Beijing, China. In many ways, Wu's artistic talent can be seen as inevitable, as his father was a talented professional ballet dancer in the national ballet of China.

Although the piano had a special place in his heart as a young child, it wasn't Wu's one and only fascination. Before Wu knew it, Chinese literature and art greatly interested him and became his hobby. One of Wu's inspirations is legendary Renaissance painter Leonardo da Vinci. It is the Italian artists knowledge and experience in a plethora of socially valued and professional fields that intrigues him most. Like Leonardo, Wu is fixed on being a well-informed in many different things.

Over time, Wu continued on with his musical journey and in 2007, Wu learned to play various traditional Chinese instruments as an undergraduate in college. In the Chinese culture, music, literature and art, is something that complements one another.

In 2009, Wu found a way to represent his culture and share his artistic talent with others by pursing a Master of Arts degree as international student at Columbia University in New York. Wu say's, "Chinese music has a very close relationship with Chinese literature and art, so learning Chinese instruments can better my understanding about Chinese literature and provide me with a unique perspective to view Chinese culture."

Wu's goal as a talented musician is to introduce the Chinese culture to other ethnic groups around the world. He is able to do this by melding traditional Chinese and Western classical music. Wu says, "From the appearances, traditional Chinese instrument look quite different from Western instruments. However, what a lot of people don't know is they actually both have more similarities than differences." they have different looking, all of them are instruments and tools

Wu considers himself a cultural ambassador who understands how important and beneficial it is understand cultures outside of his own. Wu says, "I understand that this is all a two-way process. Learning about other cultures allows me to know more about my followers and possible and future audiences or students."

Wu has preformed at Columbia University, Harvard's popular Sanders Theater, and New York's elegant Carnegie Hall. In effort to raise awareness of his music and culture, Wu continues to educate people by giving performances and lectures in front of large audiences.

Fans can look forward to Wu's unique fusion of Chinese traditional and Western classical music, in a solo concert at Carnegie Hall. Wu looks forward to continuing his musical journey for years to come and hopes to one day perform at the White House, and for middle and high school students in the near future.
