The Importance of Clearly Identifying a Niche and Meeting the Needs of the Identified Niche

Many small business owners and entrepreneurs know the product they want to market or they know the market they want to be selling to. The difficulty comes in merging these ideas with the right product for the right niche market. The broadly based idea that a product is for any one from 18-65 years of age is not only ineffective in today’s saturated product markets, it also will likely land the business owner with a lot of inventory and no market at all.

Identifying Your Niche

A product will only be a great product if it sells. Finding the right market niche can be tricky depending on the interpretation of the market research and the application of it to your study. Selling re-usable shopping bags to consumers who want to be environmentally friendly may seem like a great approach. However, narrowing that approach to being busy, working women who want bags that are decorative and higher end with designer names- this is a stronger, more defined market niche.

The needs of these high powered women are for bags that reflect a level of social consciousness and trendiness while being actually practical for their groceries. Lining these pricey bags with a washable insert would be meeting their needs for practicality in addition to still having the flashy, outer appearance.

This trendy niche- like most others- has its limits. Once the bag hits a certain price point it may be exceeding the tolerance of the market. By considering how many truly glamorous, high end women go pick up their own groceries will help the entrepreneur  work with a more concentrated market niche, touching on just the right price points and demographic.

Narrower than Narrow

Identifying your niche market and ensuring your product is truly reaching that niche is critical to being successful in the dynamics of today’s fast paced buying and selling. Business owners are seeing far more success by focusing on a smaller niche market with the ability to reach through any number of portals whether it is technology based ones or more traditional forums for reaching consumers.

The internet and cell phone technology can reach a far narrower consumer group than the traditional days of women’s magazines or men’s sports shows or even children’s cartoons which will allow business owners to have a far more focused approach for selling their product. Ensuring that your product not only reaches this niche market but in fact is meeting the needs for this niche is a critical success factor for business owners.
