Can I put a rubber ball in my mouse cage?
I have two fancy mice and in their cage they have a woven nest and a wheel. Earlier when I took them out to play, i had a rubber ball on the table with them and they would nudge it around. I was wondering if they could have that in their cage as a permanent toy, or would it hurt them?
Well first off im a rat person, but im going to answer this as best I can okay?
With any small animal there is always a risk they could chew a toy and ingest it (causing harm.) With a rubber ball this is definitely the case. Though there mouths may be too small to 'bite' at a ball properly (depending on the size) I still wouldn't risk it. My recommendation would be to keep the rubber ball for supervised play time and maybe try and find another more suitable ball for the cage.
In my rats cage I have a ball that's actually a cat toy. Though it has slits in it (so they could in theory chew the plastic) they most likely wont (as it wont taste good) and any small amount that could be potentially ingested probably wouldn't cause any harm. The key is to always determine the risk factor based upon your pets and experiences they've had in the past (ie: my rats have been exposed to hard plastics with minimal chewing)
Maybe look into untreated wooden beads? Since they're smaller and chewable? I unno, just an idea to look into.
Hope this helped a bit!
