Physics question - power of the Thames.....?
An OTEC plant uses 7.5m^3s^-1 to produce a megawatt of exportable power, assuming a temp difference of about 25 degree centigrade between the cold and warm water supply.
The river Thames flows at about 60m^3s^-1 - how many River Thames' would you need to provide the required flow to replace a typical coal-fired power station that is generating 5.102GW?
No idea if you need to use all the variables or not - any help is SO appreciated plzzzzz
Volume of water needed per second = No. of OTEC plants required x 7.5 .....
ie (5.102 x10^9 /1 x 10^6) x 7.5 = 3.8 x 10^4 m³/s
Thames provides 60 m³/s ........... so, 3.8 x 10^4 /60 = number required = 638 !!
This is assuming the Thames water could be reduced by 25ºC ....... it would start freezing after a drop of about 15°C !
